Durban with DJ Lag – A Destination Soundtrack

There are few artists who embody the pulse of a place as intensely as DJ Lag. Internationally celebrated and widely regarded as the King of Gqom, the Durban-born producer and DJ has played a defining role in shaping South Africa’s electronic identity. As one of the founding figures of Gqom — the hard-edged, bass-heavy genre that emerged from Durban’s townships and went on to influence dance floors worldwide — he continues to push the sound forward while staying deeply rooted in his hometown’s unmistakable rhythms.

With his powerful new 12-track mixtape Southside, released via Black Major x Ice Drop, DJ Lag delivers his most commanding statement yet. The project captures both his evolution as a global electronic artist and the raw energy of Durban’s underground — the very spirit that defines his personal Destination Soundtrack of Durban.

KwaMax (Durban)

KwaMax is hands down one of the best tshisanyama spots in Durban. The food is always on point, the DJs play good music, and the whole place feels more elevated than most traditional tshisanyamas.
Soundtrack: DJ Lag, Zee Nxumalo – Ngyasindelwa (ft. K.C Driller)

1947 (Florida Road)

1947 is a great dispensary in Durban, based on Florida Road. You can go get your greens, but it’s also a place where you can chill for hours. You can play pool, watch games when they’re on, and just hang out. It’s relaxed and social.
Soundtrack: QWELLERZ – UZWILE

Nkandla Forest (Krantzkloof Waterfall)

This is one of the best places to go if you want to chill or go on a hike. It’s calm, surrounded by nature, and if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also quad biking you can do. It’s perfect for switching off.
Soundtrack: &ME, Keinemusik, Rampa, Adam Port – Muye

uShaka Marine World

If you’re looking for something fun for the whole family, uShaka is the go-to. You can bring your kids and easily spend the entire day there, with plenty to do. It’s pure Durban nostalgia.
Soundtrack: Kelvin Momo – Thoughts of You

Real Barber (Lamontville)

If you’re visiting Durban and need a fresh cut, Real Barber in Lamontville is the spot. Ask for Small Boy — he’s my go-to. You’ll leave feeling sharp and ready for the city.
Soundtrack: Offset, Young Nudy – Dope Boy
