Desperados and tunes&wings teamed up to present you their festival tips 2018. Biweekly articles guide you through the summer months and to a fantastic festival season. Camping hacks, rave outfits, sustainability, how to keep your drinks cool and much more. Cheers to a fantastic festival summer!

The feeling when the beat drops or the melody creates a spheric atmosphere and you look into the eyes of a stranger, smiling at each other and know you are feeling the same, right in this moment. Music is connecting. Remembering the roots of the techno community and raves helps getting along with each other on festivals, where the lack of showers, toilets and crowded dance floors might cause a bad mood. This article also includes some practical tips that ease the communication with others on the festival.

‘Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen’

(Engl: peace, joy and pancakes) was the motto of the Loveparade, the mother of raves. Reflecting this, this article starts with the ‘We are one family’ Loveparade video which shows the original spirit of the techno community during raves back in the 90ies:

Common Sense at Festivals

Spread the good vibes: Festivals are amazing gatherings of people brought together by music. We all go to festivals to have fun, to quit everyday life for a few days, to dance and to enjoy the music. Most of the time even DJs see themselves as part of the community and not as person apart from the crowd, so festivals should be a time of togetherness and not of egos.

How to stay connected with your Group of Friends

It sometimes happens that you loose each other. In this case your mobile phone probably either has no internet connection or battery. Tip: Agree on meeting points to make sure you’ll find each other again. Your friend doesn’t show up? Well, maybe he or she just found a festival love or changed the stage? In this case it makes sense to talk about the ‘festival schedule’ before. Which act is playing where and when and who should be on your list? How to organise this even better: Take a screenshot of your personal timetable and use it as your mobile phone screen background.

Respect each Other

Give others their room to dance without pushing and shoving. Help others out whether they feel dizzy and need water, ask you for a Desperados at the camp site because they just fell in love with someone else or want to practise a handstand – share moments with friends and strangers alike.

Being in that bubble of ‘I need to go in front of the stage or I need space to dance or I need to go through the crowd with my full drink’ often creates a bad feeling towards you and others. What about popping the bubble and be friendly to others. A simple ‘Hi, sorry may I just pass’ might bring new festival friends – or at least a smile and cheerfulness.

Most importantly: Smile – not only because others need it, but you do.
