Born in South Africa, Sheila moved to New York at the age of seven, where she spent her childhood. As a teenager, she relocated to Portugal, where she quickly discovered the worlds of clubbing, electronic music, and DJ culture. Today, she is one of the country's recognizable techno artists, deeply connected to the Portuguese electronic music scene.

Discovering Esmoriz & Portugal's Atlantic Coast

Esmoriz will always be more than just my hometown. It's where I grew up, where I discovered my connection to music, and where I still come back to reconnect between intense weekends of travelling and performing.

There's something truly special about this part of Northern Portugal. The Atlantic Ocean, the slower pace of life during the day, the energy of summer nights, and the contrast between nature and nearby cities create a unique atmosphere.

For me, Esmoriz is deeply connected to identity, emotion, and inspiration. It's also home to the legendary Sound Waves Festival, Portugal's most iconic techno festival and a project that has helped put this region on the international electronic music map.

Malibu Pizzaria

One of my favourite places near the beach is Malibu Pizzaria.

It has a warm and authentic atmosphere, combining Italian cuisine with traditional Portuguese flavours. Everything is prepared in a wood-fired oven, giving the food a distinctive and comforting character.

It's one of those places where time naturally slows down. Whether it's dinner after a beach day, catching up with friends after a studio session, or simply enjoying a summer evening, Malibu always feels welcoming and genuine. The combination of great food, the smell of wood-fired cooking, and its proximity to the ocean creates a very special energy.

Marlago

Marlago is another place I really enjoy, not only for the food but also for its exceptional service and welcoming atmosphere.

The attention to detail and the way guests are received create a truly comfortable experience. It's especially perfect if you appreciate high-quality meat dishes, particularly matured meats and picanha, while embracing the relaxed coastal lifestyle of Portugal's Atlantic coast.

Sunset by the Atlantic Ocean

One of the best things to do around Esmoriz is simply watching the sunset by the sea.

There are several beautiful beachfront spots where people gather at the end of the day to relax, listen to music, and enjoy the Atlantic atmosphere. During the summer months, everything feels vibrant and alive while remaining authentic and uncomplicated.

Those moments before a show, watching the sun disappear into the ocean, are something I always treasure.

Slow Down on the Portuguese Coast

Whenever I need to disconnect from touring or spending time in the studio, I naturally return to the coast.

The sound of the ocean and the slower rhythm of life in Esmoriz help me reset both mentally and creatively. Outside the peak summer season, the atmosphere becomes even more introspective and peaceful, making it the perfect place to recharge.

Sound Waves Festival & Northern Portugal's Techno Scene

The electronic music culture around this region has grown tremendously over the years.

There are several nightlife venues nearby where people connect with music in a genuine, emotional, and authentic way. What I love most is that the atmosphere still feels close to its underground roots.

During the summer, everything reaches another level with the arrival of Sound Waves Festival. As one of Portugal's biggest techno events, it has become an important meeting point for artists, DJs, and ravers from all over the world.

Local Creativity & Hidden Gems

I enjoy discovering smaller creative spaces, local cafés, and independent businesses throughout the region.

Some of the best inspiration comes from simple moments: walking by the ocean, listening to music while driving along the coast, or stumbling upon hidden corners that most visitors never find.

Walk the Passadiços Along the Atlantic

One experience everyone should have here is exploring the connection between the wooden passadiços and the Atlantic Ocean.

You can spend an afternoon in Esmoriz enjoying local cafés, culture, and the town's peaceful atmosphere, then moments later find yourself walking along the wooden boardwalks overlooking the ocean at sunset.

That balance between nature, lifestyle, and the sea feels uniquely Northern Portuguese.

Explore Esmoriz Like a Local

If you truly want to experience the essence of this region, take your time.

Drive along Portugal's Atlantic coast outside the busy summer season. Stop in smaller towns, discover hidden places, embrace the slower pace of local life, and enjoy the connection between music, nature, and the ocean.

That's the version of Esmoriz I know best—and the one that continues to inspire me the most.
